Praia, Oct 23 (Inforpress) – Sociologist and researcher César Monteiro argued today that the new generation of Cape Verdean musicians maintains a “different, but real” relationship with traditional music, contradicting the perception that young people are distanced from this cultural legacy.

The specialist was speaking to the press on the sidelines of a round table entitled “Cape Verdean music: path and challenges of its evolution”, promoted by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (FCSHA) of the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV), in Praia.

"Young people of this generation, aged 18 to 50, aren't turning their backs on traditional music (...). Even those who aren't into traditional music have respect for traditional music. They don't attack it, they don't be hostile to it," he noted, based on a study he's been developing.

"In fact, my thesis is to try to deconstruct, and I'll take this opportunity to state it here, this facile idea that young people don't care about traditional music. I can demonstrate this with data from field research.
