City of Praia, 18 Mar (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic will visit Santa Luzia on Saturday, accompanied by diplomats and representatives of international organizations, with the aim of promoting sustainable solutions to address the challenge of solid waste accumulated on the island, classified as a National Natural Reserve.
In a press release, the Presidency of the Republic stressed that the island of Santa Luzia, the only uninhabited island of Cabo Verde, has been receiving significant amounts of plastics and other waste carried by ocean currents over the years, with an estimated more than 140 tonnes still awaiting removal.
According to the same source, this visit is part of the President’s concerns as Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance, by UNESCO, and Champion for the Preservation of Africa’s Natural and Cultural Heritage, by the African Union.
In this regard, it explained that José Maria Neves’ visit aims to stimulate joint action among public entities, partners and civil society to find sustainable and viable solutions to address the major challenge of waste accumulated on the island, classified as a National Natural Reserve.
