More than 150 thousand sea turtles were released in 2024 by the Biodiversity Project and BIOS Cabo Verde

Sal Rei, Apr 16 (Inforpress) – The Biodiversity Project and BIOS Cabo Verde, which work on the conservation of the common turtle in Boa Vista and Sal, released more than 150 thousand sea turtles in the 2024 season.

The information was released by Riu Hotels & Resorts, as part of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, with initiatives to protect and conserve biodiversity, after the presentation by the two NGOs of the results of the loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta) nesting season, and which have the support of Riu Hotels & Resorts.

According to the data presented, more than 115,000 hatchings were recorded on Sal Island, while more than 34.500 hatchings were recorded on Boa Vista Island. The hatchings occurred in conservation aviaries maintained by the two organizations on Sal and Boa Vista.

Boa Vista Island was home to 60 percent (%) of the total number of turtles, with a record of 22.427 nests in the Turtle Nature Reserve, of which 600 were protected in incubation centers, achieving a hatching success rate of 77,9%, in addition, 7.576 turtles were monitored and 169 were rescued.
