Praia, 26 June (Inforpress) - José Nildo Galdino, the mayor of Lagoa de Velhos (Brazil), is visiting Cabo Verde for the first time to take part in the Brazil-Cabo Verde Forum and share his municipality’s experience of solid waste management.

The initiative is part of the “Sustainable Lagoa de Velhos” programme, which the mayor José Nildo Galdino intends to present at the Brazil-Cabo Verde Forum, which forms part of the third Cape Verde Teleport Mission.O projecto assenta em três eixos principais: saneamento básico, energias renováveis e lixo zero, sendo este último o tema que o autarca pretende partilhar com entidades públicas, empresários e demais participantes do fórum.

According to José Nildo Galdino, speaking to Inforpress, the waste management model operates through a community association called “Mãos que Reciclam”, (Hands that Recycle) which is responsible for the collection and recovery of recyclable materials, using a social currency called “Fabião”, named in honour of Fabião das Queimadas, a historical figure in the culture of Rio Grande do Norte.
