Praia, Jan 15 (Inforpress) – The presidents of the Cape Verdean Music Society (SCM) and the Cape Verdean Society of Authors (Soca) warned today in Praia of a “lack of respect” for copyright, particularly by radio stations.
Speaking to Inforpress on the occasion of World Composers’ Day, marked annually on January 15, the president of SCM said that disregard for copyright has been the main challenge faced by Cape Verdean composers.
According to Nhelas Spencer, non-compliance with legal obligations by some entities, notably Rádio Nacional and Rádio Televisão de Cabo Verde, has contributed to the devaluation of authors’ and composers’ work, negatively influencing the behaviour of other radio stations.
“Authors’ rights are not being respected, especially by radio stations. Rádio Nacional and Rádio Televisão de Cabo Verde are examples of companies that do not respect authors’ and composers’ rights. And other stations follow suit, saying that if Rádio Nacional is not paying, why should they pay,” he stressed.
