Mindelo, 2 November (Inforpress) – The Ponta d’Pom sea turtle conservation campaign recorded 86 nests and 184 tracks on the beaches of São Vicente this year, as well as contributing to the release of over a thousand hatchlings.
The figures were provided to Inforpress by Zuleica Duarte, the biologist in charge of the campaign for the non-governmental organisation (NGO), who gave an overall positive assessment of the season and described the results as encouraging, despite some worrying situations relating to the animals’ safety and limited resources for monitoring.
According to the official, 63 nests and 133 tracks were recorded at Praia Grande, whilst 23 nests and 51 tracks were recorded at Praia do Lazareto.
The biologist explained, however, that the tracks do not necessarily correspond to different turtles, as the same animal may visit the beach several times during the season.
