São Vicente: Biosphere 1 calls for “urgent measures” to end “turtle killing” by stray dogs

Mindelo, Aug 9 (Inforpress) – The president of the Biosphere Environmental Association 1 urged authorities to take “urgent measures” to end the “killing of sea turtles” by stray dogs, which already has three cases in São Vicente.

At this point, as Tommy Melo told Inforpress, the association has been facing dogs “voraciously attacking” turtles and nests in Mindelo, with three deaths already recorded.

“These are overwhelming deaths, with the animals being badly beaten by dogs and eventually dying,” explained the environmentalist, for whom this phenomenon is created by “social and municipal mismanagement”, which allow “large quantities” of stray dogs in the island and now attacking a species protected by law.

The cases, according to the same source, were reported on the beaches of João Evora, Lazareto, Calhau, Praia Grande and Baía das Gatas, among others, where turtles and nests are in danger, when already facing other threats arising from human factors, including capture, climate change and sand extraction, and now “this aggravating”.
