Praia, Sept 2 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, addressed to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, a Note of Condolence for the death of Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbatchev, former President of the former Soviet Union and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
In the Note, the President of the Republic expressed, on his personal behalf and the State of Cabo Verde, “deep sorrow” at the physical passing of “a great Statesman, who has undertaken extraordinary reforms in his country and in the world, and an uncompromising defender of multilateralism and peace.”
“Deceased last Tuesday night, at the age of 91, victim of prolonged illness, Mikhail Gorbachev will forever be remembered as the last President of the Soviet Union and the man behind the end of the Cold War who opposed the Western and Soviet blocs between 1947 and 1991. A recognition that would be worth the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990”, reads a note published by the Presidency of the Republic.
The last president of the Soviet Union had been away from the media for years due to health problems.
