Porto Novo: Portuguese NGO challenges farmers to “put into practice” agroecological techniques

Porto Novo, Aug 26 (Inforpress) – The Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Mértola (Portugal), which has been promoting projects related to agriculture and the environment in Santo Antão, today challenged farmers from Porto Novo to “put into practice” agroecological techniques.

This association is currently implementing, in the municipality of Porto Novo, the agro-forestry systems project, in which it has held meetings with farmers to encourage them to put into practice agroecological techniques to cope with climate change. “The aim is to encourage farmers to put into practice the agroecological techniques the project on agro-forestry systems has been testing in experimental fields. These practices have proved to be conducive to the climate of Santo Antão”, said the Portuguese organization.

Farmers in the municipality of Porto Novo, who are experiencing several consecutive years of drought, have been guided by project technicians on agro-forestry systems in the implementation of the techniques.

As part of this project, experiments have been tested in terms of water mobilization in the municipality of Porto Novo, in order to help farmers to face the difficulties related to water for agriculture.

The use of hydrogel, which allows the storage of “large amount of water” is one of the experiments that are being tested, also highlighting construction of small reservoirs (cocoons) for water mobilization.
