Mindelo, Jan 24 (Inforpress) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations defended, in Mindelo, during the Ocean Race Summit, that it is necessary to make 2023 a year of “super-action”, to end the ocean emergency “of a once and for all”.
António Guterres, who was speaking at the summit taking place as part of the Ocean Race passing through São Vicente, warned that some have called the year 2022 the “super year” of the ocean, but the race is far from over.
For this reason, he called for an effective implementation of the various legal and political instruments related to the ocean, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which turned 40 last year. Also the “long-awaited” agreement on the marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, which cover more than two-thirds of the ocean and whose last global meeting failed to take place.
For António Guterres, urgent action is also needed in the four other fundamentals areas.
