Maio Island: Salt collection by elders consider abandoning centennial practice

Porto Inglês, Jun 26 (Inforpress) – Women who have been involved in salt collection in the salt flats area of Porto Inglês for about five decades have considered abandoning this practice and dedicating themselves to other activities due to their advancing age.

The elderly women who toil in that space, considered one of the most emblematic of the island, argue to Inforpress that despite enjoying the activity, they began to practice this activity when they were still very young, others even as a child, due to health problems and age already advanced, have little motivation to continue next year.

The salt producer Maria Freire, 65 years old, said that she learned the trade with her mother since she was 10 years old and she has been collecting salt from that time every year.

“I still remember seeing several ships in the port waiting for the salt to take them to the other islands and even to some countries off the coast of Africa”, said Maria Freire, who named ships like “Lurdes”, “Conceição”, “Neptuno”, “Liberal”, “Arlete” e “Magui”, among others, were frequent on the island to supply themselves with salt.
