World Asthma Day: Illness hits 11% of Cabo Verdean population, expert says

Praia, May 7 (Inforpress) – About 11% of the Cabo Verdean population undergoes respiratory distress attacks, asthma, an expert on immunoallergology Maria do Céu Teixeira told Inforpress.

Speaking to Inforpress, the specialist explained that, as part of the World Asthma Day, which is held annually on the first Tuesday of May, there is no study at country, but advanced data portrays some islands situations.

“There is no national study to identify the prevalence of the disease, but what I can say is that there are some studies, few done on the subject and we know that in a study elaborated in 93/94, in the islands of Sal and São Vicente, labeled that the pathology of Asthma is around 7 to 11% in the pediatric population at school ages”, she said.

Also according to the expert, another study developed in São Vicente and Santiago in 2006 revealed a prevalence of around 11% in a population over 20 years old.
