"Union Rejects Longer School Hours, Calls for Specialised Education for Street Children"

Praia, 31 July (Inforpress) – The president of the Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sindprof) stated today that extending school hours “makes no sense” when it means overburdening teachers, but she recommends setting up specialised education programmes for children living on the streets.

In an interview with Inforpress, Lígia Herbert suggested that what needs to be set up is an after-school study programme, aimed especially at children living on the streets.

She said it made no sense to extend the timetable when the teaching load for subjects had already been reduced, with teachers having 11 classes.

“But expand it how? What they need is specialised education for street children, because inclusion isn’t something that can be imposed,” she asked.
