Cidade da Praia, Feb 24 (Inforpress) – Marine biologist and project coordinator at ECOCV, Edita Magileviciute, stated today in Praia that the valorisation of marine macroalgae represents a strategic opportunity for income generation and environmental sustainability in the archipelago.
The specialist was speaking on the sidelines of the technical workshop on the valorisation and management of macroalgae, taking place today and Wednesday at Jean Piaget University, with the aim of sharing experiences and promoting sustainable solutions for the use of this natural resource.
“We cannot treat macroalgae as waste that causes negative impact. They are rich in proteins, minerals and nutrients and can be used in various industries, such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals and biofuels,” explained the coordinator of the Cape Verdean Ecotourism Association (ECOCV).
According to Edita Magileviciute, macroalgae have been part of the marine ecosystem for thousands of years, but the recent increase in their proliferation across several islands requires new management approaches and sustainable utilisation.
