Tarrafal: Symposium report indicates that the former camp’s bid for UNESCO status is at an advanced stage – IPC president

Tarrafal, 26 June (Inforpress) – The president of the Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC) gave a positive assessment on Thursday of the International Symposium on the former Tarrafal Concentration Camp, highlighting progress in the case for the site’s nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Speaking to the press, at the close of the second and final day of scientific and thematic debates at the symposium ‘Tarrafal Concentration Camp Museum of Resistance: Safeguarding Memory, Inspiring Humanity’, held in the auditorium of the former camp, Ana Samira Baessa stated that the proceedings had enabled an in-depth reflection on heritage, classification processes and the challenges of heritage management following international recognition.

According to the organiser, the various panel discussions provided a comprehensive overview of issues relating to the site’s outstanding universal value, including international experiences from Portugal, Brazil and Burkina Faso, as well as contributions from national experts on heritage education and community participation.

The IPC president explained that the nomination of the former site is based on three fundamental pillars: the criteria set out by the World Heritage Convention, the tangible attributes that underpin those criteria, and the capacity for the conservation and management of the property.
