Tarrafal: International Symposium Reinforces Candidacy of Concentration Camp for UNESCO World Heritage Status - IPC

Tarrafal, June 25 (Inforpress) – The International Symposium “Museum of Resistance of the Tarrafal Concentration Camp” marks the culmination of the candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status and a moment of reflection on the exceptional universal value of Tarrafal, stated the president of the IPC.

In statements to the press, Ana Samira Baessa explained that the meeting is part of the final phase of technical and scientific consolidation of the dossier, within the scope of the site's candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status, which will be resumed on May 1, 2024.

““Since then, we have been carrying out very in-depth technical and scientific work, in addition to the restoration of the site, including the collection of testimonies, with a view to realising this great ambition of securing recognition for the Tarrafal Concentration Camp (Prison Camp),” she said.

Ana Samira Beassa recalled that the process was hampered by UNESCO restrictions on the inscription of new sites of memory linked to recent conflicts, which led to a methodological reorganization of the application.
