São Vicente: Ribeira de Vinha with crop problems due to “very brackish” water – responsible

Mindelo, May 3 (Inforpress) – The agricultural area of Ribeira de Vinha is suffering with crop problems in the lands due to the “brackish” water, at this moment used for cultivation of pasture, informed the field official of the Friends of Nature Association.

Farmers in this agricultural perimeter have encountered this problem, despite initiatives for water desalination in this area for irrigation, and in the case of the association, according to José Silva, only practically allows them to grow pasture for their animals.

“The water from the wells is very salty and although we have solar panels to pump the water at long distances, we have only used it for grazing”, he explained, recalling the times when they were able to remove from the land onion with half a kilo.

This former farmer was speaking to Inforpress during a study visit held by the elementary school students that the agency has monitored, but which also allowed him to see the other side of the coin with greenhouse cultivation, “quite satisfactory”.
