Mindelo, July 22 (Inforpress) – The Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC) will invest approximately eight million escudos in the architectural rehabilitation and enhancement of the Dom Luís and Dona Amélia lighthouses on the island of São Vicente, with works already underway.

Speaking to Inforpress, the president of the IPC, Ana Samira Silva, explained that the works are being carried out as part of a project to enhance the heritage of lighthouses, funded by Spanish Cooperation to the total amount of 62,000 euros, covering eight lighthouses spread across five islands.

According to the official, the works include the architectural restoration of the buildings, the repair of existing damage and the improvement of accessibility, with particular emphasis on the Dona Amélia Lighthouse.

“We are going to make a significant improvement in terms of accessibility, taking into account one of the project’s objectives, which is to promote the lighthouses as tourist attractions. We will also be working on the heritage interpretation aspect,” she said.
