Santo Antão: Tourism is “a possible way in the battle against poverty” that reaches 45.7% of Santo Antão people – PR

Porto Novo, Jun 7 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, said this Thursday in Santo Antão that the development of tourism is “a possible way in this battle against poverty” that reaches 45.7 per percent of the population of Santo Antão.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca, speaking at the opening of the international seminar on sustainable tourism in the city of Porto Novo, referred to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), according to which 45.7% of the population of Santo Antão is poor, with 17.1% living in extreme poverty.

The increase in tourism, especially in its ecological and social aspects, could be, said the President of the Republic, a way to combat this phenomenon in Santo Antão, and for this reason, it is necessary the integration of communities in the definition of the “supply chain of the products” and the “making” of the packages to be made available to tourists.

In the opinion of the Head of State, Santo Antão can also explore the so-called humanitarian tourism, which can help solve the social problems that afflict the island, namely poverty, but also the requalification of housing and schools, as well as such as the cleaning of cities.
