Ribeira da Barca fishermen call for subsidy due to climate impacts

Praia, Jan 19 (Inforpress) – The president of the Ribeira da Barca Fishermen and Fishmongers Association today called for the creation of a subsidy to support fishermen prevented from working due to rough sea conditions associated with climate change.

José Rui de Oliveira was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the National Workshop on Social Protection in Fisheries and Aquaculture, where the study “Analysis of barriers to access to social protection programmes and microinsurance, including gaps in legislation and financing mechanisms” was presented.

He explained that between January and March the fishing community faces major difficulties, as rougher sea conditions hinder fishing activities and significantly reduce fish availability.

“The challenge is to have a subsidy to help fishermen who are affected on those days and are unable to work due to rough sea conditions,” said the president, advocating for the creation of a social protection subsidy to support fishermen prevented from working, especially during critical periods.
