Prime Minister plays down José Maria Neves’s veto and says it is “all part of the democratic process”

Praia, 25 August (Inforpress) – Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho today described the President of the Republic’s refusal to accept the appointment of Júlio César Martins to the post of Attorney General as a “normal decision in a democracy”.

As he explained to journalists, the Government has the power to select and propose candidates, whilst the President of the Republic has the power to approve or reject them, “all of which is part of the democratic process”.

“When the democratic process takes its course, we shouldn’t be surprised. That’s how it’s meant to be,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of understanding how the rule of law works and the powers of each of the country’s sovereign bodies.
