Praia: Firefighters protest against “injurious and precarious” conditions and threaten to go on strike
09/03/26 - 12:30 pm

City of Praia, 09 Mar (Inforpress) – The Municipal Firefighters of Praia began today a five-day demonstration to denounce the “injurious and precarious” working conditions to which they are exposed, accusing the municipal council of a lack of commitment in fulfilling the agreements signed.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the protest, the class representative, Isaías de Melo, described the current situation as “lamentable”, stressing that after more than 20 years of service, expectations for career improvement have never been fulfilled.

“Working conditions have worsened. We have an agreement signed since 2023 that has not been fulfilled to this day. We have a small corps that is not sufficient to respond to the demand of the city of Praia,” said the spokesperson, emphasizing that the objective of the demonstration is to demand career progression and promotion, risk allowance and improvement of equipment.

Isaías de Melo also denounced the situation of a group of firefighters who, after three years of training by the municipality, are awaiting the regularization of their employment status, working “practically as volunteers”.
