Praia, Jun 12 (Inforpress) – Sociologist Eliseu de Pina said today that poverty is the main reason why children work to help the family economy.
Eliseu de Pina made this reading in statements to Inforpress, when invited to talk about child labour and its consequences, as part of the World Day against Child Labour, which is observed today with some INE data being relevant.
“Poverty precludes a quality life, with education, food, health and basic sanitation, which causes a lot of discomfort. When children are born in such environment their chances of completing their education and entering the job market dwindle dramatically, as they very soon end up helping the family, whether they are working or doing domestic work, “he said.
The law, according to the sociologist is clear, forbids any child or teenager up to the age of 16 to work, but in some cases are young at work with parents in agriculture, fishing and even carpentry.
