Figueira da Foz, Portugal, 1 June (Inforpress) – The Mayor of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes, presented the city’s Keys of Honour to the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, on Tuesday, describing him as an inspiring figure for the Portuguese-speaking world.

The ceremony took place at Figueira da Foz Town Hall and marked the start of an official visit to Portugal by the Cape Verdean Head of State, which will conclude on Thursday 2 July in Lisbon with a meeting with the Cape Verdean community, as part of the independence anniversary celebrations at the Cabo Verde Cultural Centre (CCCV).

“The presentation of the Keys of Honour of the city of Figueira da Foz is a tribute we wish to pay to such an important figure – not only in his own country, of course, but also for the entire Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP),” said Pedro Santana Lopes, speaking to Cape Verdean journalists.

The mayor recalled his "long-standing friendship" with José Maria Neves and expressed his admiration for the work carried out by the Cape Verdean statesman, both as Prime Minister and as President of the Republic.
