Porto Novo, Jan 12 (Inforpress) – Water pumping for human consumption to the Northern Plateau from the Escravoerinhos spring has reduced by half the availability of water for agriculture in Martiene, in the municipality of Porto Novo.
The warning was issued today by farmers in Martiene, who called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) to help the sector find new water sources to compensate for the situation.
Januário Cruz, spokesperson for the farmers, told Inforpress that all farmers who rely on water from the Escravoerinhos spring have complained about reduced availability since water began being pumped to the Northern Plateau.
He suggested that the MAA support farmers in capturing water from small springs in the Escravoerinhos riverbed to make it available for agriculture in Martiene, helping them maintain their activity.
