Porto Novo, Nov 18 (Inforpress) – Volunteer firefighters in the municipality of Porto Novo, Santo Antão, urge the Government to move forward with the promised fire brigade legislation in Cabo Verde, which, they warn, leaves the corporation “unprotected”.
The new commander of the firefighters in Porto Novo, Balbino Cruz, highlights the lack of legislation, specifically “a statute that protects the institution”, as one of the main concerns of the institution in this municipality, “several times,” expressed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition to Porto Novo, corporations in the other municipalities of Santo Antão have also been insisting on the need for “the Government to deliver on its 2016 promises,” that is, to provide Cabo Verdean firefighters with specific legislation.
In a recent visit to Santo Antão, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Paulo Rocha, faced with the firefighters’ claim, explained that this is a “complex rule” which has to be approved by the National Assembly, “because it interferes with the competences of the City Councils. “It is a complex issue, but his ministry is “committed” to fulfilling this “commitment later this year (2019),” he said.
