Praia, Oct 17 (Inforpress) – The Ombudsman, António do Espírito Santo Fonseca, asked this Wednesday at a hearing in the 1st Commission in parliament, the MPs’ intervention in solving the problems of hygiene, health and overcrowding in the Praia Central Prison.
The official was speaking during the hearing at the Specialized Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights, Security and State Reform (1st Commission) to prepare the debate on the state of justice in Cabo Verde.
According to António do Espírito Santo Fonseca, on September 25 he made a surprise visit to the Praia Central Prison, in São Martinho, during which he took the opportunity to deliver questionnaires to prisoners, prison officials and officials, administration and social workers.
Although the questionnaires are still under review, he found that the situation in this prison is “acute” and therefore took advantage of the parliamentary hearing to “raise awareness” on water, hygiene, health and overcrowding problems in Praia Central Prison.
