National Director for the Environment denies environmental abandonment of Boa Vista Island
21/03/25 - 02:13 pm

Praia, Mar 21 (Inforpress) - The national director of the Environment today refuted statements by the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV) about environmental abandonment on the island of Boa Vista, considering the information ‘intentionally wrong, irresponsible, parochial and dangerous’.

Ethel Rodrigues was speaking at a press conference in the city of Praia, following claims by the PAICV Political Commission in Boa Vista that the government has not given due importance to the issue on the island, preferring to worry only about tourism revenue.

‘The idea that people are going to Boa Vista to get money from tourism is intentionally wrong, irresponsible, parochial and dangerous. For the time being, the Ministry of the Environment doesn't manage the resources from the tourist tax, everyone knows that this is earmarked state revenue, to which the whole country contributes,’ he explained.

He added that the Tourism Fund is applied with priority to the tourist islands with transparent criteria, maintaining that it is only out of ‘ignorance and a negative attitude’ that the idea of the island's abandonment in the environmental field can be propagated.
