Museums Forum: UNESCO calls for a greater focus on research, preservation and engagement with communities (with audio)

Praia, 29 July (Inforpress) – The National Commission for UNESCO emphasised on Tuesday the urgent need to strengthen scientific research, protect museum collections and foster closer ties with communities and schools in Cabo Verde.

This position was put forward by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO, José Évora, on the sidelines of the 2026 Museums Forum, an event organised by the Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) under the slogan “Museums uniting a divided world”, as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Central Bank and the 3rd anniversary of the Bank of Cabo Verde Museum (MBCV).

According to the same source, the main priorities are protecting collections from illegal trafficking, investing in scientific research, and bringing museum structures closer to young people and schools.

José Évora explained that he had taken the opportunity presented by the meeting of national and international experts to raise awareness of UNESCO’s 2015 Recommendation on the protection and promotion of museums and collections, emphasising the urgent need to bring national practices into line with international guidelines.
