Mindelo, 27 May (Inforpress) – The Minister for the Sea stated today that construction work on São Francisco beach, in the city of Praia, “had been resumed illegally” following a halt ordered by the authorities, and that everything built in breach of the authorised plans would be demolished.
Jorge Santos was responding to the administrative appeal for annulment, accompanied by a request for a provisional suspension, lodged by the Attorney General’s Office with the District Court of Praia, seeking to annul the granting of a maritime area to a private company for the construction of a tourist development.
Speaking to Inforpress, the minister explained that the concession had been authorised in early 2024 by the Concessions Office, based on environmental impact assessments and the relevant legal requirements, but that the execution of the works ultimately completely undermined the project that had originally been approved.
“The concessionaire expanded the concession area by more than 120 square metres and completely changed the type of construction, which was supposed to be temporary, removable and made of lightweight materials such as wood, switching to a concrete structure – something that was never authorised for the beach,” he explained.
