Porto Ingles, Nov 5 (Inforpress) – Farmers from the Monte Vermelho area in the island of Maio are leaving the field due to lack of water in their wells and the beneficiaries of the borehole claim that the amount supplied has been revealed insufficient.
In a conversation with Inforpress, farmer João de Deus said that due to lack of water in the wells they are resorting to supplying water from one of the wells there, but the amount has been insufficient to irrigate their plots.
In addition to irrigating the plants, farmers still need water to feed the animals, the reason why João de Deus and some colleagues have stopped growing new crops, but only irrigating the fruit plants, “when this is possible”.
João de Deus used the occasion to urge the Government and the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to implement measures to support Maio farmers, as Maio is the island with less rain this year, and almost not rained in the last four years.
