Porto Inglês, Mar 21 (Inforpress) - The health delegate for the island of Maio, Elton Cruz, clarified today that the HIV/AIDS situation ‘is under control’ on the island of Maio, contradicting the ‘biased information’ that has circulated in the media in recent days.
In a press release, the person responsible for health on the island of Maio called for a ‘better approach and handling of information’ on health by the media, in order to ‘avoid panic’.
‘’It's necessary to have a better approach to dealing with health information which, when treated without rigour and out of context, can have negative effects and cause stigmas in the population, ‘’ he said, referring to an online newspaper that recently reported, in a ‘’decontextualised manner ‘’, that 50 people on the island were infected with HIV.
Elton Cruz pointed out that the island registers one to two new cases of the disease a year and that the figure of 50 infections corresponds to an accumulation of more than 20 years.
