Porto Inglês, Sept 08 (Inforpress) – Maio Island, which contributes just 1.2% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), today observes its Municipal Day and the feast of its patron saint, Nossa senhora da Luz (Our Lady of Light), while facing structural and social challenges.

According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), youth unemployment on the island stands at 25.4%, well above the national average, while the overall unemployment rate is 8%.

The island has also seen a population decline of 8.9% over the past decade and is currently home to 6,330 inhabitants.

Nevertheless, access to basic services remains high: 96.6% of households have electricity, 92.7% piped water, and 94.3% private sanitation facilities.
