Praia, Jun 14 (Inforpress) – The director of the Blood Bank of the Agostinho Neto Hospital (HAN) told Inforpress on Monday that this unit makes three thousand blood transfusions a year, but voluntary donations have reduced it by 80% to 60%.
Carlos Neves was speaking in an interview with Inforpress during the celebrations of June 14, World Blood Donor Day, which this year is celebrated under the theme “Safe Blood for All” and focuses on “donating blood and access safe transfusions as an element in achieving universal health”.
According to the doctor, the Blood Bank of the HAN is always in the need, because makes transfusions every day and therefore needs to receive. But the blood supply that the hospital has usually receives from donors or relatives of people who are hospitalized and who need transfusions, or from mobile collection made outside the hospital.
Annually, according to this person, three thousand blood transfusions are made in this unit, because it is a hospital that serves the population of South Santiago, but also receives patients in bad condition from North Santiago and evacuated from other islands, in addition to cases of chronic surgeries and anemia requiring regular transfusion.
