Government recognises shortage of specialists in the country to care for children with special needs

Praia, Jul 17 (Inforpress) - The Minister of Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, said today that the government is ‘aware and conscious’ of the shortage of specialists in the country for the early and effective care of children with special needs.

The minister made these statements after being questioned by journalists about a complaint made on Wednesday 16 by the president of the Colmeia Association, Isabel Moniz, that the association has a shortage of specialists and is at risk of closure due to a lack of funding.

"We have more than a hundred and something associations dedicated to the issue of children and adolescents. We know that we still have a long way to go and that we have already done a lot, but we are aware and conscious that we have a problem with specialists in Cabo Verde. It's not for lack of political will and it's not for lack of will to do", he said.

The minister also considered that the lack of specialised professionals in the country to work with people with special needs is a reality that exists and that the government has to change it by strengthening the training of people in these areas, through the Ministry of Education
