Government accuses the MpD of misrepresenting the IMF’s clarification and reaffirms the 8.3 billion escudos discrepancy in the public accounts

Praia, 4 August (Inforpress) – The Government accused the MpD on Monday of “distorting the facts” regarding the IMF’s clarification on public accounts, reaffirming that there is a difference of 8,336 million escudos between the approved budget and the budget currently being implemented.

In a statement, the Executive maintains that the MpD is seeking to turn a technical clarification from the IMF into an alleged rebuttal of Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho, as part of a “strategy of distortion” designed to sidestep the issue of the discrepancy between the expenditure forecast and the approved budget.

According to the Government, the IMF “has not contradicted the Government” and that the Fund merely explained the nature of its mission in Cabo Verde and the scope of the issues examined during the technical visit to the country.

According to the statement, during the mission, the Government outlined the priorities of the new administration, briefed the IMF on the process of preparing the Amending Budget and, as part of the monitoring of the ongoing programme, reviewed the Medium-Term Budgetary Framework and the macroeconomic forecasts for 2026.
