Cova Figueira, 2 July (Inforpress) – The Fajã Solar Sustentável (Sustainable Fajã Solar” project, which was initially designed for the fishing community of Fajã, has been extended to Alcatraz Baía, enabling more fishermen to have access to clean energy, Mayor Manuel Teixeira announced today.
Speaking to Inforpress, the mayor of Santa Catarina do Fogo, Manuel Teixeira, explained that the expansion of the project was the result of an agreement with the funder, after it was found that the photovoltaic plant’s production capacity exceeded Fajã’s needs, enabling it to also supply the Alcatraz Fishermen’s Centre.
The work is due to be completed this July, at which point the infrastructure will be made available to the communities, although the official opening will take place in September, attended by representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
‘With the same funding from the UNDP, we realised that energy production would exceed Fajã’s needs. In consultation with the funder, we proposed extending the project to also cover Alcatraz, an initiative that was accepted and which will benefit two fishing communities,’ explained the mayor.
