Fogo: New FAO representative visits island to learn about projects supported or funded by FAO

São Filipe, Aug 6 (Inforpress) – The new UN Food and Agriculture Organization representative, FAO, is starting her first visit to the island today to contact local authorities and learn about projects supported or funded by the organization.

During the visit, Ana Laura Touza will meet the heads of the three City Halls of the island and the delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, field visit to see the work developed by the “Strengthening adaptability and resilience in the forest sector in Cabo Verde” project, called Reflor-CV, and meetings with  community based organizations representing the project in Monte Velha.

FAO currently supports or finances five projects on the island, namely capacity building and resilience in the Cabo Verdean forestry sector, support for integrated action against maize cartridgeworm and emergency aid for the fight against maize  army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda), emergency assistance to farmers affected by the effects of the bad agricultural year and drought, and emergency aid to protect and restore livelihoods and increase the resilience of households affected by the volcanic eruption of 2014.

Because of this emergency relief project for those affected by the volcanic eruption, the FAO representative and the project managers and technicians will visit Chã das Caldeiras.
