São Filipe, Aug 1 (Inforpress) – The 2019 agricultural campaign was started Wednesday in some parts of the island with the seeds being thrown to the ground, as soon as the first rains fell, not in a significant amount, but enough to germinate the seeds.
On Wednesday afternoon, 31, the bustle of farmers, especially from traditionally agricultural areas, was large and despite the fact that the first rains fell a little late, they are hoping for a good agricultural season. Inforpress, in a round trip to the northern part of Fogo island, recorded the beginning of agricultural work in a part of the town of Ponta Verde and Fontinha, in the municipality of São Filipe, and in the highlands of the Mosteiros, namely Cutelo Alto, Coxo and in a part of Ribeira do Ilhéu, believing that in the coming days there will rain in more significant amount.
In the locality of Cutelo Alto (Mosteiros), according to the information gathered from the local population, about 90 per cent (%) of the peasants have already sowed, part of which was “dry sowing” due to the low rainfall recorded in the last days are germinating. The most cautious wait for the most significant rain to start working for fear of losing the sowing just as it did last year, due to the poor availability of seeds and their high cost.
In several other localities of the municipality peasants are finalizing the preparations for agricultural work, by digging holes so that as soon as rain comes they can sow the seeds to the ground. On Wednesday there was drizzle in various areas and farmers, despite two years of consecutive drought, expect the rain to occur more intensely to start the process.
