São Filipe, Apr 22 (Inforpress) – The population from Chã das Caldeiras in the Fogo Island welcomes the decision of the authorities to divert the route of the road in this area, whose initial project involved the destruction of the few farmlands that “survived” lavas from the last eruption.
However, they have told Inforpress that they are dissatisfied with the abandonment of this community which, they point out, is part of a protected area.
The last eruption of November 23, 2014, in addition to destroying the two main settlements, consumed 208 hectares of farmlands, corresponding to 24% of the 848 hectares of farmlands existing in the Caldeira.
Given that the initial project of the new road “stole” part of the remaining farmlands, the population was against it, but the news that the road was finally diverted, crossing the lavas accumulated in the last two eruptions “reassured the community”.
