Cabo Verde to have new tobacco legislation in three to four months – responsible

Porto Novo, Oct 29 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde will have, within three to four months, a new tobacco law, which is “on its way” for approval by the Council of Ministers, announced the Coordination Commission for Alcohol and other Drugs (CCAD).

Celso Monteiro, CCAD’s tobacco control focal point under the Ministry of Health and Social Security, said that the new “coming out” tobacco legislation replaces the 1995 law and will have as “key measure” the clinical treatment, ie consultations for tobacco addicts.

The new law, which will be passed in early 2020, also includes a sanctioning regime for offenders, provides for the increase of smoke-free spaces and also aims to “protect minors from smoking,” explained Celso Monteiro, who was on Monday in Santo Antão, where he presided over the inauguration of the tobacco control focal point on this island.

Santo Antão also received a workshop this Monday, during which the National Strategic Plan for Tobacco Control for 2019-2023 and the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control were presented.
