Cabo Verde takes over chairmanship of ECOWAS Election Commission Network steering committee

Praia, Aug 9 (Inforpress) – The President of the Cabo Verde Electoral Commission was elected chairman of the ECOWAS Election Commission Network (ECONEC) steering committee during its 6th General Assembly, held from August 6 to 7 in Abuja.

Maria do Rosário Gonçalves, who will chair ECONEC during the 2019/2021 period, succeeds the president of the National Independent Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, who has been in charge of the commission for the last two years.

According to ECONEC source, ahead of the meeting, the international symposium on Promoting Inclusion in the Electoral Process was held to create a platform to discuss legal frameworks and desirable practical measures to improve the participation and representation of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities in the Electoral Process in West Africa.

Created in 2008, ECONEC aims to promote free and credible elections, to promote independent and impartial electoral organizations and administrations, to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process through free and credible electoral procedures, to develop a culture of electoral professionals with integrity, common sense of public service and commitment to democracy. ECONEC’s next biennial general assembly will be held in Praia, Cabo Verde, in 2021.
