Cabo Verde strengthens field epidemiology research with the introduction of the intermediate level

Praia, 3 August (Inforpress) –   The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced today the launch of intermediate-level field epidemiology studies in order to meet the country’s needs, utilising qualified staff.

In a statement to the press, the president of the INSP, Maria da Luz Lima, said that the first class of the Intermediate-Level Field Epidemiology Training Programme comprises 18 health professionals and runs for nine months.

“It’s nine months of intensive training, after which all the trainees will put what they’ve learnt into practice in the field to improve their city-wide surveillance data. They’ll be able to produce surveillance reports and carry out field research,” said Maria da Luz Lima, adding that they’ll also be able to take part in epidemiological studies.

The same source pointed out that this level of training will have an impact on the quality of health information in relation to epidemiological and environmental surveillance; it represents a more advanced level of training than the country has previously implemented, bringing together the skills needed to improve the surveillance system at national level.
