Cabo Verde stands out in the preservation of Historical Memory with the registration of documents in the UNESCO register

Praia, Apr 22 (Inforpress) - The executive secretary of the Cape Verdean National Memory of the World Commission said today that the inscription of documents on slavery in the UNESCO International Register is “a privilege”, but also “a great responsibility” for Cabo Verde.

José Évora, speaking at a press conference in Praia to discuss the inclusion of documents on slavery in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, also highlighted the importance of ensuring the preservation of the documents and their worldwide access, both for the academic community and for the general public.

“Being part of the world heritage is a privilege, but also a responsibility for Cabo Verde”, he stressed, taking into account that, he continued, UNESCO will certainly be aware of how these custodial institutions will now deal with this heritage in terms of its better preservation and greater dissemination to facilitate its access, not only in Cabo Verde, not only in Africa, but that its access is guaranteed worldwide.

As José Évora explained, the work to achieve this nomination began in 2020, with the creation of the Cape Verdean National Memory of the World Committee, one of UNESCO's programs that aims to preserve and disseminate documentary heritage of global importance.
