Baía das Gatas/35 years old: The cats, the first buildings and the bay of the future

Mindelo, Aug 1 (Inforpress) – Baía das Gatas, eight kilometers from the center of Mindelo, known as a “magical place by nature”, receives annually, in August, a music festival that moves São Vicente in the artistic, festive, human and economic plan.

The name of this bay, according to documents consulted by Inforpress, derives from the abundance in its waters of a species of shark, called cat shark. With calm waters, like a natural pool protected by white sand, corals and volcanic rocks, this bay may have been the shelter of the cat shark, considered as “harmless” animal compared to the “brothers of the species”.

Nowadays, it can be considered a small town, as there are so many buildings built there, like second homes or beach houses, but in the beginning it was not so. Documents consulted by Inforpress agency in the archives of the City Hall of Mindelo reveal that the first house built there dates from the 1940s, at the initiative of the then administrator of the island, José Brito, to later belong to Jorge Grego.

The cycle of the first constructions, in a total of 14, began in the 40’s / 50’s and ended in the 60’s, when the freezing of new buildings was decreed due to the need to elaborate a plan. This forced the postponement of all construction intentions. It was not until April 20, 1984 that the Deliberative by the City Hall of São Vicente approved the Detailed Urban Plan of Baía das Gatas, which included an area reserved for tourism, for the implementation of the national Tourism Master Plan, but also the definition of allotment for private construction of 108 lots with an average area of 300 square meters.
