Praia, 26 May (Inforpress) – Former President of the Republic Jorge Carlos Fonseca has warned of the emergence in the country of rhetoric advocating autocratic and coup-mongering solutions, calling for constant vigilance in defence of democracy and the rule of law.

In a post shared on social media, Jorge Carlos Fonseca criticised what he described as “shameless” and “utterly unashamed” expressions of support for authoritarian solutions, including praise for “despots and tyrants” and calls for coups d’état.

According to the former head of state, some of these speeches draw on historical, cultural or identity-based arguments to justify positions that he considered contrary to democratic values, adding that “even bloodthirsty dictators are now being labelled as anti-imperialists”.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca also considered that such views stem from “a mixture of ignorance, lack of education, shallow cleverness and deceit”, exploiting, as he put it, the difficulties, uncertainties and disappointments that exist in society.
