Mindelo, May 13 (Inforpress) – The president of the UCID National Council today highlighted the party’s role in the struggle for democracy and multipartyism in Cabo Verde, stating that UCID “was born out of courage at a time when freedom of expression was limited”.
Dora Pires, president of the National Council of the Independent and Democratic Cabo Verdean Union (UCID), made the remarks today during a press conference in São Vicente marking the party’s 48th anniversary.
On the occasion, she stated that UCID was one of the leading actors in the fight for political openness and the implementation of democratic pluralism in the country, stressing that multipartyism “did not emerge by chance”, but through the perseverance of men and women who believed in democracy.
According to the leader, the party emerged at a time when “thinking differently required determination, sacrifice and moral courage”, with many members and supporters facing pressure and hardship during the years of clandestinity.
