Ribeira Grande, Apr 15 (Inforpress) – The executive secretary of the National Commission of Cabo Verde for UNESCO, José Évora, stated on Tuesday that Jewish heritage represents an opportunity to boost cultural tourism in Santo Antão and enhance local history.
Speaking to the press after the Symposium on Moroccan-Jewish Heritage in Cabo Verde, held at Centrum 7 Sóis 7 Luas, José Évora explained that the organization has been raising awareness among member states, including Cabo Verde, of the need to map sites of historical and heritage value.
According to the official, this work initially involves identifying relevant sites, followed by preservation actions and subsequent promotion, in order to give visibility to these spaces and strengthen their historical and cultural importance.
In the specific case of Santo Antão, José Évora stressed that the National Commission has been closely monitoring initiatives carried out by associations, as well as by local and national authorities, regarding the valorisation of the traces left by the Jewish community on the island.
