City of Praia, 09 Mar (Inforpress) – The Association for the Defense of the Environment and Development (ADAD) warned today about the degradation of ecosystems in Cabo Verde, pointing to sand extraction, excessive plastics and irregular coastal constructions as the main threats.

The appeal was made by environmentalist and commissioner of the National Commission for Human Rights and Citizenship (CNDHC), Maria Miranda Reis, on the sidelines of an international conference in Praia dedicated to preventing violations of rights.

“The protection of fauna and flora requires continuous awareness work among communities. If we take good care of the environment today, our children and grandchildren will find what we protected for a more sustainable future,” said the official, calling for an end to the “short-termism” that sacrifices natural resources in favour of quick gains.

Regarding threats to beaches from irregular constructions, the ADAD member expressed particular concern, pointing to sand extraction and negligent plastic disposal as factors causing “significant disturbance to the ecosystem”.
