BCV to issue commemorative coin honouring “Blue Sharks” historic qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026

Praia, Feb 25 (Inforpress) – The Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) will launch, next March, a commemorative coin marking the qualification of the national football team, the “Blue Sharks”, for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The announcement was made by the Governor of BCV, Óscar Santos, following a meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia. He added that production of the coin is expected to be completed before July 14, the date marking the official start of Cabo Verde’s participation in the world competition.

According to Óscar Santos, this issuance represents significant institutional recognition of Cape Verdean football, and he announced that additional coins will subsequently be issued in tribute to achievements in other sports disciplines.

The issuance of this coin in honour of the Blue Sharks, he explained, was approved by the BCV Board of Directors last week, adding that 2026 will be dedicated to the launch of commemorative coins linked to successes in handball, basketball and other sports.
